President's Message

The Korean American Music Supporters Association (KAMSA) had a very exciting year of 2008. We were finally able to make a trip to Korea with 30 Youth Orchestra members, and the week long music camp in Muju with Maestro Nanse Gum that the members attended was an impressive experience. In addition, the young musicians went on a memorable three day tour while in Korea.

KAMSA is turning 20 years old this year in 2009. Throughout our history, we have proudly continued our mission to promote the careers of young Korean-American musicians and connect them to the Korean Community and to the greater mainstream society. Along with Debut Recitals by professional Korean-American musicians, KAMSA has supported the Youth Orchestra as a way to expand the awareness of Korean heritage, to cultivate life-long friendship among Korean musicians, to foster a strong sense of identity and to promote community services.

We at KAMSA are very happy that Maestro Nanse Gum has accepted our invitation to conduct our 20th Youth Orchestra performance at Herbst Theater on Aug. 29th of this year. KAMSA is fortunate to have this incredible opportunity to make music with such an acclaimed conductor. In fact several Youth Orchestras from Korea have expressed interest in joining us for this year's concert. We have selected Arte Youth Orchestra and a few Arte students will join us this year. It is absolutely wonderful to see that a small classic music lovers organization like KAMSA bloom and to touch other music lovers' hearts in a way that leads to unity and cooperation in producing musical events.

Next spring, we are planning a recital by Richard Yongjae O'Neill, a world class violist. We will continue to feature young Korean professional musicians like Yongjae at the Herbst and other venues.

I would like to express KAMSA's sincere appreciation to the people who helped to make last year's Korean trip possible. The strong support from the parents, teachers and friends of KAMSA, Maestro Gum, the Sulwonryang Cultural Foundation, the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization, Ms. Kyungwon Park, and the Dong-A Daily News are all deeply and thankfully felt.
